The European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) approves of the UN's rule for mandatory container weight verification, but wants no part of the operation within its port precincts.
"We should avoid weighing operations increasing congestion. This could happen if misdeclared weights are detected in port areas," said ESPO secretary-general Isabelle Ryckbost.
ESPO agrees verification of container weights would enhance safety, but stresses it is shippers' responsibility and that it should not be transferred to terminal operators.
The verifications should preferably be carried out by shippers at the point of origin, said ESPO, reported Lloyd's List.
The UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) approved changes to the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) Convention that would require verification of container weights before shipboard loading, according to Shipping Gazette.
