A PROJECT that would have had six berths built adding 4.2 million TEU capacity at Tuna-Tekra at Kandla Port in northwest India has been shelved after the two interested parties withdrew without making a bid.
Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) and a consortium made up of Hyundai and Concast Infratech were in talks with the Kandla Port Trust (KPT), reported London's Port Technology International.
But prospects for a deal fell apart over viability concerns. According to the tender, the project would involve the construction of six berths with a 4.2 million TEU capacity at Tuna-Tekra in the Gulf of Kutch.
It is understood that the bidders flexibility in the build, asking to complete the project in phases. But tender terms did not allow this, demanding that it be fully built regardless of demand.
Containers have not been handled at the port for nearly a year since the previous privately-owned terminal closed over disputes with KPT.
At its peak the facility handled 167,000 TEU annually, compared to the 600,000 TEU holding capacity available. This is the second Indian government container terminal tender to collapse since the last one fell through in Chennai.
