The Port of Houston Authority posted a six per cent year-on-year increase in container volume in 2013 to two million TEU, setting a record for the port at 36 million tonnes of cargo.
The port authority said in a statement that the increase in the movement of loaded containers outpaced that of all other US ports.
Improved grain and coal exports over the prior year drove 13 per cent growth in bulk cargo to 11 million tonnes.
Operating revenue last year increased four per cent to US$231 million, marking the fourth consecutive year that year-on-year increases have been achieved.
"This is a benchmark we can all take pride in," said port executive director Roger Guenther. "It reflects positively on the efforts of port authority staff under the guidance of the port commission to increase the commerce moving through port facilities."
Mr Guenther said that it was important the port authority continue to make capital investments in its facilities to help meet the growing needs of global commerce.
