PORTLAND — The Port of Portland passed a program Wednesday to encourage Hanjin Shipping Company and other ocean carriers to keep doing business with the port.
Hanjin and other carriers will receive up to $45 per container that's moved through Portland.
The plan is only for this year and will pay out no more than $4 million. It's funded through rents collected by the terminal's operator, with no tax dollars.
The port's Josh Thomas said that if a carrier doesn't stay with the Port of Portland, the money will not be paid.
Thomas said Hanjin handles 70 percent of all international containers processed in Portland.
