TokyoEnhancing economic and defense cooperation between the Philippines and Japan will be President Aquino's main priority in his working visit here.
The Philippine leader is scheduled to arrive in Tokyo at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, for a one-day visit that includes a summit meeting with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo and attendance in a peace summit in Hiroshima. This is President Aquino’s fifth visit to Japan since he assumed office in 2010.
AREAS OF COOPERATION
Aquino and Abe are expected to discuss areas of cooperation to deepen the strategic partnership between the two countries, according to government officials. Areas of cooperation include humanitarian assistance and disaster response, maritime cooperation, promotion of trade and investments, people-to-people exchanges and the Mindanao peace process.
The territorial conflict with China will also be part of the agenda in the meeting between the two leaders.
The President is also expected to brief his Japanese counterpart about the status of the country's arbitration case contesting China's aggressive claims within its territory. Aquino has been espousing a peaceful resolution to the maritime dispute amid China's increased activity in the disputed territory.
