Dutch export to China has grown strongly in the past years. Cargo export to the Asian country almost doubled in value between 2008 and 2012, up to EUR 7.6 billion. This makes China the most important large growth market for Dutch export. Exports to the other large growth markets of Saudi Arabia, India and Indonesia did not grow strongly over the same period.
The large growth markets form only a modest portion of the Dutch export, according to the Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Export to China last year, for example, made up only 1.6% of the total Dutch export value. By contrast, the share of export to Germany was 6.1%.
In terms of value, the Netherlands was the second largest exporter of the European Union in 2012. Its share of export to the large growth markets only gained the Netherlands the sixteenth position. According to the CBS, this is partly because a significant share of the export concerns re-export, that is, products that undergo no more than minimal processing after import and are then exported again, especially to European countries.
