Guangxi's waterway cargo volume increases 31.4pc

2008-8-6

During the first half of this year, there were 37.98 million tonnes of cargo transported on waterway in southwestern China's Guangxi Autonomous Region, which is next to ASEAN countries, an increase of 31.4 per cent compared to the same period a year ago, Xinhua reported.

Turnover volume of the region's waterway cargo surged 58 per cent to 18.4 billion tonnes per kilometres.

Ocean cargo volume shot up 152.5 per cent to 7.69 million tonnes, while those transported on river rose 17 per cent to 30.3 million tonnes.

Upgrade of the region's river transportation infrastructures, rise of port throughput and expansion of ocean shipping capacity were said to be the reasons for the sharp growth.
