2008-4-24

The Port of Tanjung Pelepas will expand its container terminal by building four additional berths to form a 1.44km wharf to enable it to increase its container handling capacity to 12 million TEUs by 2011.

Construction works for berths 11 and 12 at the port, which has 10 berths now forming a 3.6km wharf, will begin soon and are expected to be completed by the second quarter of next year. Berths 13 and 14 will be constructed next year and completed by the first quarter of 2010.

"The total cost of the expansion plan which will also involve the construction of backyards and machine installation is about RM400 million (S$172 million). The additional berths will help us achieve 12 million TEUs handling capacity by 2011," said PTP chairman Mohd Shaik Osman.

He was speaking to reporters after the Integrated Management System (IMS) certificates award ceremony at the port yesterday.

Lloyds Register of Shipping (M) Bhd awarded PTP with the OHSA 18001:1999 for occupational health and safety management systems and ISO 14001:2004 for environment management system after it had passed an audit exercise by Lloyds Register Quality Assurance Limited last year.

Last year PTP handled 5.5 million TEUs. It is aiming to achieve 6.5 TEUs of this year and has handled 1.3 million TEUs todate.

Mr Mohd Shaik also said that the port was developing in stages a free trade zone on a 141 ha land. It has attracted multinational companies with RM3 billion worth of foreign direct investment.
