Maxicon starts Myanmar-India-Bangladesh service

2008-4-21

Maxicon Container Line, a division of the Hyderabad based Seaways Group, has announced the commencement of a direct Myanmar-India-Bangladesh service.

"This direct service will help strengthen the bond between the two countries. It is expected that this service will pave the way for the increase of trade and commerce," a company statement said.

The 852-TEU Marina Star 2 will first embark from Yangon (Rangoon) to Chennai (Madras) April 21. Then the 1,118-TEU Emirates Gondwana will set sail in the first week of May, connecting Yangon directly to Nhava Sheva in Mumbai (Bombay) and calling at Colombo and Chittagong on the return voyage.

This will reduce transit times and provide forwarders on the east and west coasts of India with regular service. "Shippers from North and West India can utilise the service for both Chittagong- and Yangon-bound cargoes from Nhava Sheva, while the shippers from south and east coasts can take advantage of connectivity to these ports from Chennai," the release said.

The Marina Star 2 will sail three times monthly to the east coast of India, while the Emirates Gondwana will run fortnightly to the west coast.

Myanmar primarily exports apparel, food stuffs, wood products and precious stones, and regularly imports machinery, transport equipment, construction material, food products, textiles and petroleum products.
