2008-3-11

ST Petersburg Seaport has announced that construction of a new RUB9.1 billion (US$378.8 million) container terminal on the site controlled by Fourth Stevedoring Company is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2008.

The design phase of the new box handling facility started last October, said www.dars.ru, the Russian Transport Daily Report.

The Stevedoring Company is said to have taken measures to ease congestion on the port approach roads which were described as being overcrowded with the heavy automotive equipment, in a bid to ensure the smooth flow of cargo loading and unloading at the new terminal.

The company spent RUB87.5 million on the road access improvement works, and an additional RUB247.1 million on upgrading and replacing equipment at the terminal in 2007.
