2008-2-8

The expansion of Dubai's Container Terminal 2 at Jebel Ali Port is scheduled to be completed before the end of the year, raising annual capacity to 14-15 million TEU, according to Mohammed Al Muallem, senior vice president and managing director of DP World in the United Arab Emirates.

The facility will be able to accommodate 12,000-TEU containerships, "We are not mere port operators, but an essential and efficient link in the supply chain," said Al Muallem in a report by Amman-based Al Bawaba news portal.

Speaking at the MEED Middle East Port Development Conference in Dubai, Mr Al Muallem said that a number of projects are underway at Jebel Ali Port to increase efficiency and services to customers.

This includes projects such as the port gate automation and the e-token service recently introduced through Dubai Trade, enabling customers to collect their containers without having to queue at documentation counters, the ISO 28000 certified security management system, and the new control room for monitoring and supervising port operations, the report said.

"We have now 42 terminals in 22 countries, and our future plans include 53 terminals in 27 countries," said Mr Al Muallem.
