Antwerp - DP World, Conti Lines and Rickmers-Linie have decided to enter into a joint venture to form a company to handle break-bulk, heavy-lift and project cargo.
The new company, to be called DP World Breakbulk, will operate a common user general cargo terminal at the Churchilldock in the Port of Antwerp. The agreement safeguards future capacity requirements with DP World providing break-bulk stevedoring services.
Conti Lines, the Antwerp based break-bulk owner/operator, has historically been a key general cargo customer to DP World in Antwerp, responsible for a significant part of DP World's general cargo volumes.
Rickmers-Linie has frequent calls at the Port of Antwerp with its services for break-bulk, heavy-lift and project cargo and will move its operations to the DP World facility from January 1.
DP World will hold 60 percent in the venture and Conti-Lines and Rickmers-Linie 20 percent each. DP World will manage and operate the terminal.
Eric Noterman, managing director of DP World Antwerp said: "This co-operation is the basis for creating a modern facility.''
Jan Steffens, chief executive officer of Rickmers-Linie, said: "This joint venture secures us specialised terminal capacity for the growing volumes of break-bulk, heavy-lift and project cargo shipped to and from Antwerp and enables us to develop and to offer value-added services.''
Jean-Frederic Brion, chief executive officer of Conti-Lines said: " Our goal is to safeguard and guarantee the continuity of handling break-bulk cargo in Antwerp in the future.
