The Sri Lankan government has given the green light for a project to raise the container handling capacity of Colombo Port to 5.7 million TEU by 2010 through the purchase of new cranes.
This comes after Ports and Aviation Minister, Chamal Rajapaksa, submitted a proposal for the project, reports the Sri Lankan Daily News.
The plan calls for the government to purchase four mobile harbour cranes from three European manufactures for a total of US$19.4 million. The four berths are estimated to generate an annual additional income at 40 per cent occupancy of $21.9 million.
The procurement of the new cranes will be administered by a Cabinet Appointed Procurement Committee (CAPC) and a Technical Evaluation Committee (TEC), the report said. ACT exceeded a two per cent growth in container handling during 2007
