The highest monthly container throughput 312,815 TEUs, in the history of the Colombo Port was recorded in October 2007. It was 8,190 TEUs higher than the last highest monthly throughput (304,625 TEUs) achieved in July 2007.
The Colombo Port has handled 2,833,455 TEUs during the first 10 months of 2007 reflecting an increase of 11.2 per cent compared with last year's corresponding volume.
Out of this, total increase 74.7 per cent (213, 872 TEUs) was accounted by the transshipment category. The domestic volume reported an increase of 7.4 per cent.
The total cargo tonnage in Colombo port during the first 10 months in 2007 increased to 36,204 thousand tonnes, from that of the previous year, 32,767 thousand tonnes reflecting an increase of 10.5 per cent.
Containerised cargo tonnage recorded a considerably higher growth (13.5 per cent).
This is mainly due to the significant increase in transshipment container cargo tonnage during the period under review.
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority and South Asia Gateway Terminal also handled their ever highest volume in October 2007, recording a throughput of 165,043 and 147,772 TEUs.
The previous highest volume of 165,000 TEUs and 141, 837 TEUs was reported by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority and South Asia Gateway Terminals in August 2007 and September 2007.
The break bulk tonnage declined by 1.8 per cent. The decline in Break Bulk cargo resulted as there were no import in Break Bulk Cement and less import in Break Bulk sugar during the last 10 months.
Dry bulk cargo tonnage increased by 1.2 per cent.
The total liquid cargo tonnage declined by 3.7 per cent during the period under review.
This is mainly due to the significant decrease in import of palm oil and crude oil.
Import of palm oil declined to 178,596 tonnes from that of previous year 276,081 tonnes reflecting a decrease of 35.3 per cent.
Import of Crude oil declined by 19.2 per cent while white oil tonnage increased by 23.1 per cent.
