Shenzhen-Macau container line launched to beat Hong Kong costs

2008-1-1

The first direct container shipping line between Macau and Shenzhen has been launched, Logistics Week reported.

Macau Container Terminal Co Ltd, operator of the line, the Macau Shipper's Association and Shenzhen Communications Bureau jointly held a promotional event for the new service.

Macau Shipper's Association president Deng Junfang said because of limitations of geography, Macau cargo is usually transshipped via Hong Kong. As Shenzhen's cargo handling capacity is rising, and with its more competitive pricing, an increasing number of shippers favour Shenzhen. But to be transhipped in Shenzhen, this cargo needs to be transported by barge to Hong Kong then trucked to Shenzhen, costing at least two days.

Mr Deng estimated that about 15 to 20 per cent of Macau's cargo will choose to transship in Shenzhen soon after launch of the line and the volume will continue to grow in the long term.

Customs of Shenzhen and Macau has agreed to offer one-stop clearance for this cargo.
