The Port of Rotterdam Authority has awarded the construction contract for its 16 million-TEU Maasvlakte 2 project to the PUMA (Maasvlakte expansion project organization) consortium, which comprises Koninklijke Boskalis Westminster nv and Van Oord nv.

The contract, worth about 1 billion euros ($1.44 billion), will be signed at the beginning of next year with work on the first section due to start after the summer following completion of the licensing procedures.

The first container terminals are due to be ready for operation in 2013. Following delivery, the consortium will also be responsible for maintenance work on Maasvlakte 2 for the first five years.
