2007-11-28

Hong Kong Transport Secretary Eva Cheng is leading a 29-strong shipping mission to Shanghai and Ningbo this week to promote Hong Kong's shipping and maritime services.

The mission is organised by the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council and the Marine Department. Members include representatives from the Hong Kong maritime industry and relevant organisations. The mission will serve as a platform for industry leaders to meet potential customers and partners and keep pace with the latest developments in Shanghai and Ningbo.

The mission visited Marintec China 2007, a prominent international shipping and maritime trade fair with 1,100 exhibiting companies from 30 countries and regions.

Ms Cheng also was to officiate at the opening of the Hong Kong Pavilion at Marintec China. The pavilion is set up jointly by the Hong Kong Maritime Industry Council, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and the Marine Department to showcase Hong Kong's strengths in maritime services such as ocean transport, ship management, ship registry, maritime communications and navigation equipment.

Ms Cheng was to open a seminar on Hong Kong maritime services in Ningbo, where speakers from the mission updated a mainland audience on Hong Kong's professional services in shipping finance, insurance, maritime law, taxation, ship management and shipping register.

During the four-day mission, Ms Cheng met the director of the Shanghai Municipal Port Administration Bureau, Xu Puixing, Ningbo Mayor Mao Guanglie and the director-general of the Ningbo Municipal Bureau of Communications, Yu Gang.
