Schenker has held a ground-breaking ceremony to mark the start of construction on a 15,000-square metre logistics hub near Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) to strengthen the company's capacity in the region.
The facility, expected to be completed in April 2008, is in the Song Than Industrial Zone of Binh Duong province, close to the old South Vietnamese capital.
To develop and operate the new logistics hub, Schenker joined Vietnam's largest shipping agency, Gemadept in a joint-venture called Schenker Gemadept Logistics Vietnam Ltd, which will provide warehousing and contract logistics.
The logistics hub will serve both export companies with its container freight station (CFS) function as well as international companies from the growing hi-tech industries around this southern logistics hub.
A statement issued on behalf of Schenker by parent, Deutsche Bahn AG, said Schenker and Gemadept have been working together in the logistics sector since 1993. "Our new joint-venture will extend additional services to our existing customers and support our further growth as one of Vietnam's leading logistic providers," said Thomas Lieb, member of the board of Schenker AG for global air and ocean freight operations.
"Together with Gemadept, we are in a strong position with Schenker's international network and Gemadept's proven track record in Vietnam to offer best services in newly-built facilities to our global customers."
Schenker has been operating in Vietnam since 1991, where it maintains 120 staff in three offices. In October, Schenker entered the national market with a wholly owned subsidiary, Schenker Vietnam to offer global air and ocean freight services, the company release added.
