Fuel surcharge for Colombo feeders
POSTED: 9:16 a.m. EDT, August 13,2007

A fuel surcharge has been announced for Colombo feeders. Ranging from $25 to $50 per TEU, it will apply to all loaded and empty boxes feedered to and from the Sri Lankan port. Meanwhile, the state-owned container terminal in Colombo has unveiled plans to add berths for feeder vessels in a bid to raise productivity and reduce congestion as the volume of cargo increases and navigation restrictions intensify. The northern entrance to Colombo port is currently closed to ward o ff probable attacks by Tamil Tigers, with the result that only one navigation channel is open to traffic. This has led to congestion, long waiting time and rising costs. The proposed berths will be for smaller regional feeder vessels that call at the port for transhipment to various ports in South Asia via Colombo.
