Indian Railways has decided to implement air-conditioned local train project in Mumbai on its own, instead of letting the private sector do it. Speaking at the conference of Chief secretaries here today, Mr V.N. Mathur, Member-Traffic, Indian Railways, said, ¡°We have decided to implement the air-condition local train project in Mumbai ourselves instead of inviting private parties to invest in rolling stock. Our only concern is whether people in Mumbai would be ready to accept the service (given that there is huge congestion and pressure in the present non-AC train capacity itself).¡± Suburban non-air conditioned trains in Mumbai carry an average of about 5,000 passengers per rake against the capacity of 1,700 passengers. |
