Kenya Ports contracts off-dock CFSs to decongest Mombasa port

THE Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) is pinning its hopes that two inland container freight stations it has contracted will help decongest the clogged Mombasa docks, reports the Nairobi Daily Nation.
KPA managing director Abdalla Mwaruwa blamed the high number of containers piling up at the port on the inability of Rift Valley Railways to move them out and the low capacity of local trucks.
Ships calling at Mombasa have warned they could impose a surcharge for delays caused during the discharge of their vessels, which agents say will run to US$15,000 per ship per day.
Together the two contracted off-dock facilities can handle 6,000 containers a month each, which should relieve the port that has been handling 15,000 a month, 8,000 more than its capacity.
The KPA contracted Mombasa Container Terminal and Consolbase after placing a public tender to container freight station operators licensed to store vehicles in Mombasa and then visited bidders on inspection tours.
Inspections aimed at finding whether bidding companies could store 3,000 TEU on site, the accessibility to roads and the possession of yards large to accommodate the movement of TEU and FEU trailers. |
