Northport aims to be at forefront of Malaysia's halal distribution
POSTED: 8:40 a.m. EDT, May 25,2007
Terminal operator Northport at Malaysia's Port Klang says it is keen to collaborate with the Port of Rotterdam, Europe's only certified halal hub, to realise its goal of becoming a major global distribution point of halal products.

The world market for halal products is estimated to be worth US$150 billion a year, with biggest demand in west and southeast Asia, according to Bernama news agency. Northport is served by more than 80 shipping lines with links to 200 ports, reaching one billion consumers, including 30 million in Europe.

Given that the economic gains from greater bilateral trade with Rotterdam would be considerable, lead logistics providers operating at Northport have been establishing links with their network of companies in ports such as Rotterdam to expand the scope of the halal products distribution pipeline.

The role of the logistics providers is regarded as crucial by Northport as they help develop "multi-country destination containers" for cargo consolidation and deconsolidation at selected ports.

In addition to Rotterdam, Northport said it would like to work with other emerging halal hubs, including Marseilles and Dubai which have direct access to large Muslim consumer markets.
