Very large container ship (VLCS) orders are rising, being led by the eight 12,300-TEU ships being built by Samsung, says a recent AXSLiner News fleet forecast.
"As far as VLCS - ships over 7,500 TEU - are concerned, there are 164 such ships in service and a further 133 on order, with orders logged during the very first days of May included in the figure. They represent 32.5 per cent of the total orderbook in TEU terms," said the survey.
Hanjin Shipping, the fleet forecast said, has added five 8,580-TEU vessels to its orderbook from Hyundai Heavy Industries while Reederei Claus Peter Offen has ordered four VLCS from Daewoo.
These orders, added to panamax contracts, have boosted the orderbook to an all-time high of 4.9 million TEU, representing 48.9 per cent of the existing container fleet.
Annual growth, assuming there is no scrapping after this month, means there will be 4,438 vessels totalling 11.06 million TEU in service by January 1, an increase of 15.6 per cent over 2007.
By January 1 2009, newbuilding orders call for 4,883 ships totalling 12.65 million TEU, up 14.3 per cent in 2008, and some 5,228 ships from January 2010, comprising 14.1 million TEU, a rise of 11.9 per cent.
"Orders are still rolling in for 2009 delivery," said the AXSLiner report. "The average growth for the period from January 2007 to January 2010 - three years - stands at 13.9 per cent per annum in TEU and 13.1 per cent in dwt terms." |
