NYK to incorporate two 8,600-TEU newbuilds
POSTED: 9:56 a.m. EDT, March 24,2007
JAPANESE freight transportation group NYK has taken delivery of the second and third newbuilds in a series of eight 8,600-TEU containerships on order. The order consists of four vessels built by South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries and four from IHI Marine United Inc.
The two new ships will be deployed into NYK's East Asia-Europe (EU4) service which is operated by Grand Alliance shipping lines and calls at ports in China, to meet growing demand for container transportation.
The container ships have been named the NYK Venus and the NYK Vesta. They measure 338 metres in length and are 46 metres wide, weighing in at 97,825 and 94,000 deadweight tons respectively.
The vessel purchase is intended to stabilise liner service schedules and enhance cost-competitiveness by expanding the size of NYK's vessels.
The other five vessels are expected to be constructed by the first half of 2008 and incorporated sequentially into the Grand Alliance's European routes.
