New container security system installed in Portland

GE Security has installed a new alarm system in the Port of Portland in Oregon state to guard against container tampering, UPI reported.
The company said that CommerceGuard System alerts officials whenever a container is opened without authorisation, helping protect against theft or attempts to plant terrorist bombs inside.
The Port of Portland has long been an embarkation point for wheat exports to Asia; however it has been steadily increasing its volume of cargo containers. The number of containers handled last year was up 34 per cent from the year before.
CommerceGuard is designed to meet the specifications of the US Port Security Act of 2006, which requires security devices on cargo containers that will secure the container door and also identify a specific container and record any unauthorised entries made between the time the container was sealed and its arrival in Portland.
The system's CSD (container security device) is placed on the inside of the container door and records each time it is opened. The data can then be picked up by an inspector carrying a handheld wireless device without having to open the door itself, the report said.
