GLOBAL growth and domestic political change in America combine to draw greater attention to safety and corporate social responsibility, said Koji Miyahara, president of the giant Japanese shipping giant, NYK Group.

"Japanese waters were rife with maritime accidents. All group members need to remain aware of safety and corporate social responsibility [CSR]," he said in a New Year's message to employees.

Providing a global survey, Mr Miyahara said more stress will be laid on safety and social issues in the wake of November's congressional election result in America.

"The Democratic Party's victory will bring policy changes that could reshape that nation's political and economic landscapes. We need to keep a close eye on potential changes," he said.

"We find ourselves in an age that calls more strongly for a consciousness of CSR. It is an indisputable prerequisite that every corporation establish a relevant internal control system and comply strictly with laws and regulations," said Mr Miyahara.

Economic prospects looks bright, he said. "Rapid economic growth is likely to continue in China. Middle East oil-producing nations are enjoying an historic windfall, earning tremendous amounts from sustained crude oil prices. In Europe, the economic boom seems to be continuing while Latin America is maintaining a remarkable economic advance.

NYK business results were favourable, he said, but "we have yet to resolve a critical issue: returning our Liner Division and Nippon Cargo Airlines to profitability".
