Singapore Airlines and regional wing SilkAir cut fuel surcharges
POSTED: 10:50 a.m. EDT, January 29,2007

Singapore Airlines (SIA) and its regional wing SilkAir have announced they will reduce fuel surcharges from this week following the recent declines in jet fuel prices.

The cuts, ranging between 2.0 and 4.0 US dollars will be effective for tickets purchased from Tuesday, the airlines said in separate statements. It will be the second reduction by the two airlines since October.

For SIA flights between Singapore and other Southeast Asian destinations, the levy will be reduced from 18 dollars to 16 dollars while the surcharge between the city-state and North American cities will be cut by four dollars to 78 dollars.

The levy for other flights will be cut by two dollars to 52 dollars.

For SilkAir, the levy for Singapore-India and Singapore-China routes will be cut by two dollars to 52 dollars and for all other flights, it will be reduced also by two dollars to 16 dollars.

Crude prices have fallen almost 30 percent from the all-time peak of above 78 dollars reached in July because of unusually mild winter weather in the US and rising US energy reserves.

At 10:00 am (0200 GMT), New York's main contract, light sweet crude for March delivery, was 39 cents higher at 55.81 dollars a barrel.

SIA said however that jet fuel prices have not fallen to the same extent as crude oil and the difference between the two remains high.

"Collections from the fuel surcharges have only given partial relief from the cost increase as a result of the high price of jet fuel."

The airline said it will continue to monitor the price of jet fuel and regularly review the level of the surcharge.
