First Choice plans Exeter Airport expansion
POSTED: 2:28 p.m. EDT, October 26,2007

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner jet could soon be flying in to Exeter Airport, taking off for the Far East and America. Travel holiday firm First Choice, which has made a major investment at the airport, could bring the new superjet to fly from Exeter.

The package holiday firm recently announced it will base an Airbus A320 plane at the airport all year round, rather than for the winter season only at present. The plane can carry 180 passengers and was previously based at Cardiff. The move creates 50 jobs - 14 pilots, 35 cabin crew and one administration worker - and means the airline will fly to more destinations from Exeter next summer, including Corfu, Rhodes, Ibiza and Larnaca, as well as an increase in its flights to Tenerife.

The airline has also hinted that in the future it may consider flying Boeing's new Dreamliner 787 plane from the airport to long-haul destinations. These could include the US as well as more far-flung countries in the middle and far east. First Choice will be the first European airline to take delivery of Boeing's Dreamliner. It will receive 8 in 2009 and will have 23 by 2012, when Virgin and BA get their first planes.
