The Port of Shanghai realized a cargo throughput of 537 million tons in 2006, according to the Shanghai Port Administration.
The throughput first hit 100 million tons in 1984 and began to keep a rapid growth after that year. It respectively surpassed 200 million tons and 300 million tons in 2000 and 2003.
In 2006, the throughput reached 537 million tons, jumping 21.2% from the previous year and taking 12% of the total cargo throughput in China. Thus, the Port of Shanghai has become the largest port in terms of cargo throughput instead of the Port of Singapore.
Meanwhile, its container throughput kept a continuous increment in 2006 and reached 21.71 million TEUs at the year-end, rising 20.1% than 2005.
Shanghai Port production will completely increase this year, with the construction of the first and second phase of Yangshan deep-water port.
