THE Dongguan Cargo Terminal of Guangzhou Baiyun Airport started operation recently, becoming the airport's first cargo terminal outside Guangzhou, Logistics Week reported.

By setting up air cargo terminal in nearby cities, Baiyun Airport will extend its terminal service to important cargo origins, an official of Baiyun Airport said.



The airport is expected to open the same kind of cargo terminals in the Pearl River Delta cities of Jiangmen, Zhongshan, Huizhou, Shenzhen and Foshan and further expand service coverage to the whole pan Pearl River Delta region, the report said.



Thus, the cargo sources of Hong Kong and Shenzhen airports will be carved up, the report said.



Air cargo collected in the Dongguan terminal will be taken to Baiyun Airport by GPS-positioned trucks and then loaded on cargo jets, achieving "seamless air-truck intermodal transport between Dongguan and Guangzhou", said the report.



The new terminal, located in Liaobu Town, one of the manufacturing centers of Dongguan, is 70 minutes away from Baiyun Airport by road.
