Shanghai Port, one of the world's largest, has handled more than 20 million TEU (twentyfoot container equivalent units) so far this year.
The port is expected to handle 21 million TEU for the entire year, compared with the 18 million TEU last year, said Chen Xuyuan, president of Shanghai International Port (Group) Co., Ltd.
Chen said Shanghai Port has grown rapidly. The port was visited on average by 2,173 container ships from more than 300 ports around the world each month from January to November this year.
The president forecasts that by 2010 the port will handle 34 million TEU.
Shanghai Port handled 443 million tons of cargo last year, more than any other port in the world. Its container handling was third in the world.
