Malaysia's second national carmaker Perodua eyes more exports
POSTED: 2:09 p.m. EDT, April 10,2007

Malaysia's second national carmaker Perodua is revving its export business this year, especially in Indonesia and Britain, local press reported Tuesday.

Perodua wants to sell 4,000 units of its Myvi compact car in Indonesia and more than 1,000 units in Britain in year 2007, Managing Director Hafiz Syed Abu Bakar told the New Straits Times, an English daily.

The second national carmaker made its maiden shipment of 300 units 1.3-liter Myvi cars under the Daihatsu Sirion (a model by Japanese automaker Daihatsu) badge to Indonesia about two weeks ago, said Hafiz, adding this marks Myvi's first foray into the ASEAN market and the first export of any model under the Daihatsu badge.

As for the British market, Perodua started selling the Myvi models in the last quarter of year 2006 and has sold some 500 units since then.

Hafiz said his company looks forward to exporting more to Britain, the ASEAN market (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) as well as the Middle East countries.

Perodua is the current market leader in Malaysia's automotive industry in terms of sales but its export volume has been relatively small, added the report.
