Works on the INR 3.6-crore project to create direct reception and dispatch of goods at the goods shed in Tirupur railway station, got underway here on Friday.
A dedicated line to take the goods trains directly to the goods shed would be laid by linking the presently unused shunting line at the station with one of the main tracks, as part of the scheme.
An engineer in the Railways said, "For this, a crossover point will be first created along Tirupur-Uthukuli stretch so as to facilitate a link to the present shunting track."
Tha Railways engineers said that "We have commenced the re-grading works in spells without disturbing the traffic. As part of the re-grading, the existing slope in the track from Tirupur railway station towards Erode side will be straightened so as to give more stability to the goods train coming with heavy loads."
Once the dedicated line and the other development works planned at the goods shed were completed, larger quantity of cargo could be handled in quicker time without disturbing the main rail traffic, the officials pointed out.
