Taking a lesson from the recent bomb blasts at Chennai railway station, authorities of the North-Central Railway are planning to step up security with more metal detectors and Closed - Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at 5 railway stations in Uttar Pradesh (UP).
Agra, Mathura, Jhansi, Kanpur and Allahabad railway stations will be covered under the Integrated Security System (ISS), which has a total budget of about INR 16.70 crores.
According to a statement released by North-Central Railway (NCR), CCTV surveillance systems will be installed at the railway stations and around 232 cameras will track movement of commuters within the station premises. Metal detectors will also be installed at various entrances of the stations, while baggage scanners and video surveillance based on optical fiber system will be part of the ISS system.
NCR authorities also plan to set up control rooms to oversee activities inside as well as outside stations. A system of 16 monitors, tracing various locations, will be set-up in each city.
The control room will be monitored by a nearby police station. ISS is likely to prevent any untoward incident and would be thoroughly passenger-savvy, says the railway handout.
The work for upgrading security systems at railway stations is likely to start after elections.
