The state-of-the-art Integrated Security System (ISS) installed by Railways in Thiruvananthapuram Central and Ernakulam Junction stations will be commissioned on Thursday.

With this, all the three busy stations in the State will have the ISS in place to improve security on Railway premises, ensure safety of the people, and avert terror attacks.

Divisional Railway Manager Sunil Bajpai said that the trial run to fine-tune the system and plug loopholes has begun.

The ISS has been set up at a cost of INR 3.3 crore in Thiruvananthapuram Central and INR 3.5 crore in Ernakulam. Kozhikode, falling under Palakkad railway division, was the first to commission the ISS in the State.

The elite Railway Protection Force (RPF) will manage the system. It comprises a closed-circuit television surveillance system, access control, personal and baggage screening system, explosive detection and disposal system, and system integration.

A centralised control room has been set up in the retiring room on the first floor of the Central station building to monitor through a network of surveillance cameras the movement of all those who enter the platforms, yards, circulating area, and station.

High-tech gadgets, including vehicle scanners to detect explosive substances in vehicles entering the station and multi-zone doorframe metal detectors to scan people, form part of the ISS.

As many as 79 cameras have been installed on the platform and station premises. Video analytical software and facial recognition will enable the RPF personnel to closely monitor the Railway premises. At Ernakulam Junction, the control room has been set up at the GCDA building at the second entry. As many as 67 cameras have been installed.

Railways have decided to avoid a formal function and not make the finer details of the system public. However, Rakesh Misra, General Manager, Southern Railway, will inspect the system on Thursday.

The three stations are among the 95 in the country to get the ISS at a total cost of INR 344.31 crore.
