European manufacturer Skoda Transportation's first prototype of low-floor tram 'ForCity' has entered into service in China, according to Railway Technology.
The prototype was delivered as part of a ten-year agreement signed with China-based CSR Sifang Quingdao for technologies to be used in the production of low-floor trams during June 2013.
Skoda Transportation chairman Tomas Krsek said: "The prototype of the tram ForCity in China was successfully activated and tested in the middle of January and trial runs were made in the production plant with the participance of our technicians.
"We can now announce that the tram manufactured in China is prepared for presentation to potential clients. It is a proof that the cooperation between our two companies has been a success."
The ForCity tram has an individual drive for all wheels and unique rotating chassis. Skoda trams will be used in Prague and Riga.
Skoda has trained over 150 Chinese professionals on some of the key areas of the production of a tram during 2013, with further plans to continue this year.
There are currently over 160 cities in China, which plan to invest in the development of infrastructure and rail vehicles in order to establish a robust public transport.
Skoda Transportation develops, manufactures, and supplies vehicles for railway and city transport. The company also provides repair and modernization services for rail vehicles.
