Indian, Filipino seamen face pay cuts and outsourcing

2009-8-26

SHIPPING Corporation of India's (SCI) move to replace seafarers from a private contractor is now facing union trouble after 200 workers, of which many are long-standing employees, expressed anger through the National Union of Seafarers of India (NUSI).

A high court has ruled the trade union has the right to take action against the company, reports ShipTalk.com. NUSI general secretary Abdulgani Y Serang said SCI appears indifferent to the seafarers work performance.

"If the SCI insists on continuing with its decision to outsource work, seafarers and NUSI will agitate on a larger scale in the interests of the seafarers and their families," he said.

In a separate report from MarineNet Daily News an unnamed shipowner is to cut wages for its Indian and Filipino seafarers by several percentages regardless of ship type. Despite the recession hitting shipping seafarers wages have stayed at high levels but with owners under pressure to cut back, wages may be slashed across the board.
