Saudi Arabia and Jordan sign maritime border agreement

2007-12-22

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia and Jordan signed an agreement in Jeddah on Sunday for the demarcation of their sea borders. The agreement was signed by Prince Naif Bin Abdulaziz, the Saudi interior minister and his Jordanian counterpart Eid Al Fayez.

In 1965, Saudi Arabia and Jordan signed a land demarcation agreement.

Meanwhile, Prince Naif hailed the strong relations linking Saudi Arabia and Jordan. He said that these relations are an example to be followed as they are based on religion and language and supported by the pillar of neighbourhood.

He added that this could be seen clearly as no border dispute between the two countries was ever reported. Prince Naif pointed out that the signing of the sea agreement was done in an atmosphere of fraternity with the keenness of each party to preserve the interest of the other.

"I have participated in so many border negotiations between Saudi Arabia and some of its neighbouring countries, and due to the existence of some differences the negotiations had taken a long time, but with the Jordanians the negotiations were conducted smoothly and easily," the Saudi Interior Minister pointed out.
