Germany Confirms Warplane Crash in Switzerland
POSTED: 2:30 p.m. EDT, April 13,2007

A German air force Tornado jet crashed in the Swiss Alps on Thursday, one of the two crewmen was hospitalized, the other still missing, the German Defense Ministry confirmed Thursday.

Swiss media reported that the German warplane was on a training flight from Corsica to Germany when it crashed just after 3:00 p.m. local time, shortly after a refueling stop near the Swiss city of Lucerne.

The warplane was put into service in 1981, German television reports said.

Germany last week deployed six Tornados to Afghanistan on reconnaissance mission under NATO command. The crashed jet did not come from the same squadron, the German Defense Ministry said.
