Cathay cargo rises 13.9pc in May

Hong Kong's Cathay Pacific Airways and Dragonair posted a 13.9 per cent increase in cargo volume during the month of May to 138,448 tonnes year on year, said the company.
According to Shipping Gazette, the cargo and mail load factor rose 1.9 percentage points to 63 per cent. Capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, rose 14 per cent while cargo and mail revenue tonne kilometres (RTKs) flown were up 17.5 per cent.
For the year to the end of May, tonnage rose 7.3 per cent while capacity was up 10.9 per cent and RTKs increased 11.3 per cent.
There were 2,594,459 passengers in May - up 10.9 per cent year on year. The load factor climbed four percentage points to 83 per cent, while capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), increased 5.8 per cent.
For the year to the end of May, the passenger volume rose 6.8 per cent compared to a five per cent increase in capacity.
Said Cathay revenue chief James Tong: "We saw good demand across our passenger network in May, and in particular to destinations in northeast Asia, Australia/New Zealand and North America."
Said Cathay cargo chief Mark Sutch: "We saw an upswing in demand out of the key Hong Kong and mainland China markets in May, though the rumours of major product launches failed to materialise."
