Amsterdam Airport Schiphol has posted a 7.3 per cent first quarter year-on-year increase in air cargo to 392,990 tonnes, the second best quarter in three years, beaten only by the last three months of 2013.
Regional rankings remained unchanged from 2013. Asia retained top place with a total of 142,256 tonnes, up seven per cent year on year. But its share fell to 36.7 per cent from 39.3 per cent year on year.
North America showed stronger growth, up 13.2 per cent year on year to 69,868 tonnes, a 17.8 per cent share up from 16.6 per cent. The Mideast was up 14 per cent, Africa up 1.6 per cent and Europe rose 10.9 per cent. Only Latin America fell 6.1 per cent.
Imports for the first quarter accounted for 51 per cent of the total up from 50.58 per cent year on year, while exports represented 48.99 per cent of all traffic, down from 49.42 per cent. Freighter movements grew 6.6 per cent, totalling 4,029.
"We are greatly encouraged by the traffic figures for 2014 so far, which are maintaining the positive trends of the past 15 months. We are outperforming the global market and our European neighbours," said Schiphol cargo chief Enno Osinga.
"The campaign to streamline all ground processes at Schiphol continues, so strengthening our position against other gateways and also helping to protect the role of air freight in the global transport mix," he said.
