Newark Liberty International Airport saw its air freight volume drop 12.6 per cent in 2013 as shipments to China fell to 650,541 tonnes.
According to Jones Lang LaSalle's (JLL) 2014 Airport Outlook report, imported air cargo at Newark rose four per cent as the local economy improved, but was not enough to offset dramatically lower exports, especially to China, its third largest market for exports.
Shipments to the airport's top two export markets, the United Kingdom and Germany, also were "depressed" last year along with their economies, reported the New Jersey's Bergen Record.
"The movement in goods from air to sea is having an impact at Newark," said JLL vice president Bob Silverman. "Only Newark and Oakland have airports and seaports that are so close."
In addition, the report said military mail carrier Kalitta Air, which formerly handled three per cent of the air cargo at Newark, has lost government contracts, contributing to the decline.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which owns Newark Liberty, said in its latest monthly report on airport traffic that freight volume declined by 11.6 per cent in the 12 months ended February 28 to 651,500 tonnes.
Construction activity from the port authority's US$97.3 million runway renovation at Newark, expected to be completed early next year, may also temporarily slow cargo inflows and outflows.
