Munich Airport scored a major success at this year's World Airport Awards: The Bavarian hub was selected as Europe's best airport for the seventh time and achieved an outstanding number three position in the global rankings. And in its "weight class" – airports with 30–40 million passengers a year – Munich Airport was actually number one in the world.
The airport staff deserve a special mention: The Munich Airport team was honored as Europe's best airport crew. In addition, the Bavarian air transportation hub scored high in the global rankings, taking second place in three individual categories: "Airport dining", "Terminal comfort and leisure amenities" and "VIP terminals".
In its latest passenger survey, the London-based aviation research institute Skytrax received responses from some 13 million travelers from 110 countries. The award was presented to Munich Airport CEO Dr. Michael Kerkloh at a special ceremony on the occasion of the Passenger Terminal trade fair in Barcelona.
With the outstanding results, the airport again improved on its excellent rankings of recent years. Munich was number two in Europe in both 2012 and 2013 after being voted European champion from 2005 to 2008 and again in 2010 and 2011. Commenting on the success of Munich Airport, Edward Plaisted, the director of Skytrax, said "Munich Airport offers air travelers something of a unique experience in Europe, combining innovative design and attention to detail that has seen the airport truly become an enjoyable part of
the travel experience." Plaisted added, "The renowned Bavarian hospitality continues to be a stand-out feature amongst customers nominating Munich in the survey."
Airport CEO Dr. Michael Kerkloh was delighted with the honor: "We can be very proud of our Munich Airport. I'm thrilled to see how popular we are with passengers. I would especially like to thank the more than 32,000 employees who keep the airport running round the clock."
For the World Airport Awards, the surveyed passengers rated 410 international airports and a large number of airlines. The airports are rated in 39 categories, using such key performance indicators as check-in and service quality, friendliness and competence of airport staff, shopping and leisure amenities and ease of transit between flights.
