A groundbreaking ceremony has been held at Hamburg Airport to mark the start of construction on a new air cargo terminal, reports Airport World, the journal of the International Airport Council.
Once complete, the 60,000-square metre Hamburg Airport Cargo Centre (HACC) will replace the existing Air Cargo Centre. The next step will be excavation for the foundation so that surface construction can begin this summer.
The facility is set to open in the summer of 2015, and when finished, it will provide modern and efficient freight handling processes.
The design of HACC was planned in close cooperation with freight forwarding companies already based here and 85 per cent of the space is either already under contract or fully negotiated and ready for contract.
Said Hamburg Airport CEO Michael Eggenschwiler: "The airport is investing EY Hamburg Airport EUR45 million from our own funds in the modern air freight facilities. The new HACC will further strengthen the already successful aviation sector in Hamburg, bringing security for the future."
The HACC, consists of cargo handling halls and offices, and allows for an annual capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes of air freight. It will have up to 40 loading ramps for tractor trailers and 36 parking positions.
HACC is also directly connected to the airport's apron and sufficient space has been allotted for the so-called air cargo screening process, said Airport World.
