Lufthansa Cargo has started a twice-weekly service to Milan in northern Italy that uses MD-11 freighters and its newly delivered Boeing 777 freighters on the route, according to Shipping Gazette.
Milan Malpensa Airport will become a stopover for the cargo airline's flights returning from Cairo, Eygpt to Frankfurt, Germany, a company statement said.
With its new summer schedule taking effect from March 30, the carrier will be providing its customers with connections to 300 destinations in 100 countries.
A total of 50 cities will have freighter services, most of which will be in Asia, where the airline will offer freighter connections to 23 destinations.
Freighters will fly to nine cities in North America, eight in Latin America, four in Africa and six cities in Europe.
In 2013 the carrier transported 1.7 million tonnes of freight and mail and sold 8.7 billion revenue tonne kilometres. To serve its route network the airline uses its own fleet of freighters and the belly capacities of passenger aircraft operated by parent Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.
