The facility will be used for the conversion of Boeing 737-300SF and Boeing 737-400SF. AEI has opened the first conversion line, capable of producing three-and-a-half conversions a year, with discussions in place about opening an additional line in mid-2014. "I am in the final stages of negotiating the first conversion and interest in the facility is strong. The first conversion should start in February 2014," says vice president of sales and marketing Robert Convey. Established in 1976 and a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysian company National Aerospace & Defence Industries (NADI), AIROD's facility is comprised of seven hangars with 15 aircraft bays. The agreement was signed by AEI's chief executive officer, David Sandri and Dato' Abdul Rahim Rahman, executive director of maintenance, repair and overhaul services at NADI. "AEI is very excited to have established AIROD as AEI's fifth conversion centre and the first in South East Asia. With AIROD's comprehensive structural engineering background we are confident that they will help us grow in the region and attract new customers. The addition of AIROD to AEI's operation provides the converter with 10 conversion lines across its five facilities.
