The four-year upgrade of Changzhou airport in eastern China's Jiangsu province, has recently been completed with the construction of its new 3,400-metre runway, enabling it to handle 747s and Airbus 330s, Xinhua reports.
The project extended the old 2,800-metre runway by 600 metres, enlarged the apron by 136,000 square metres to 160,000 square metres and increased its parking stands from six to 20.
The airport now can handle 19 take-offs and landings at the same time during peak hours and 200,000 tonnes of freight and 4.9 million passengers a year.
Its air freight handling efficiency has also been greatly enhanced, boosting the development of Changzhou's air-related industries.
As the new runway has been equipped with instrument landing system which can guide aircraft in low visibility, the airport will become much less affected by bad weather and the flights can enjoy higher reliability.
