EMIRATES Airline has revealed that cargo carryings on its services to and from Newcastle, have passed the million kilo mark, just over seven months after it commenced flights from the region.
This latest milestone comes following recent news that, in its first six months of operation, the carrier shipped 730,000 kilos, twice the total cargo throughput of Newcastle International Airport in the entire year before Emirates started services.
Over half of the cargo being exported from the North East, is now being flown on Emirates' services from Newcastle, according to industry statistics.
The carrier's daily non-stop service from Newcastle to Dubai, which commenced on 1 September, 2007, is operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft with up to 14 tonnes of cargo carrying capacity.
Emirates SkyCargo, has been working closely with freight forwarders throughout the North East to demonstrate the benefits of the service direct from the region to Dubai and onwards to an extensive global network of over 60 countries.
Phil Rawlings, Emirates' cargo manager UK & Ireland, said: "Demand for our service to Dubai and beyond has exceeded our expectations, and we're grateful for the support from freight forwarders and shippers throughout the North East.
"The benefits of our global network are clearly being recognised as we are carrying significant quantities of cargo from the North East to countries such as Singapore, Japan, China and Korea, as well as to Dubai itself."
