LUFTHANSA has been overtaken by rival Air France-KLM in carrying more airfreight in January and become Europe's biggest scheduled air cargo carrier.
Lufthansa Cargo moved 130,000 tons in January, down 1.3 per cent from the same month a year ago while the volume for the group as a whole, including that of Swiss carrier, rose by 12.6 per cent to 148,000 tons.
Lufthansa's cargo revenues increased by 3.4 per cent year on year on the back of a similar growth rate in capacity, to leave the load factor unchanged at 65.6 per cent, reports New York's Journal of Commerce.
The carrier's strongest market is still the Americas despite the US economic downturn, with volume growing by 26.1 per cent to 43,000 tons and revenues swelling by 30.3 per cent.
By comparison, Air France-KLM's cargo traffic rose by 3.3 per cent in January to 113,705 tons due strong network growth in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Revenue was up by 3.9 per cent on a 4.3-per cent increase in capacity, lowering the load factor by 0.3 percentage points to 62.4 per cent, it added.
