Japanese domestic airfreight shipments sees 0.3pc drop in '08

2007-12-20

AIRFREIGHT shipments in Japan in fiscal 2008 are expected to drop 0.3 per cent from the previous year, falling for the ninth consecutive year, due to slower personal spending growth, according to Nittsu Research Institute and Consulting, reports the Japan Corporate News Network.

Estimates for the next fiscal year, starting in April, were made on the basis of the research company's assumptions of 3.9 per cent annual growth for the global economy and 2.1 per cent growth for Japan.

Meanwhile, international bulk shipments are expected to stay firm as continuing growth in China and emerging economies is likely to offset slowdowns in the US and European economies, the research unit of the Nippon Express group said.

Container exports are estimated to rise 4.4 per cent, while air cargo exports are expected to climb 4.9 per cent.

For imports, on the other hand, container shipments are seen posting a 2.8 per cent increase, while air cargo shipments are expected to dip 0.3 per cent, the research institute said.
